In 2020, Basilicata was the Italian region where the water losses were highest, amounting to over 60 percent of the drinking water in the network. The regions of Abruzzo, Sicily, Molise, and Sardinia followed. In these regions, only half of the drinking water volume reached end-users. Water leakage was caused by the aging distribution network, which was an issue in most of the national territory: considering the whole country, the average water losses amounted to 42 percent of the volume treated and put in the distribution system.
